June Diva Dare - Day 11

Hi Verve fans!  It's Julee here, wrapping up the final day of our Puddles of Color June Diva Dare with a little mixed-media goodness.

My card features a sentiment from the Let it Be set, paired with our Starry Die   It' no secret that I'm particularly fond of Soft Sky, so I just had to bring it out, intending an orange and aqua combo.  I cut the Starry Die out of a scrap of crumb cake paper, then used the negative as a stencil to pounce some Surf colored paint on the Soft Sky background.  Then I used the left over paint on my stippling brush to swipe some strokes on the background and also onto a piece of white corrugated card stock.  Next I outlined the crumb cake stars that had been cut out already with a white Pitt pen, then colored with prisma color pencils and lightly swiped the edges with the Surf paint.  In the meantime, my stenciling piece had dried and I loved the look of it, so I decided to make it the focal point and emboss the Matthew 5:16 verse in white on my DIY stencil.  I added a bit of a Scalloped Trim Trio die cut below the crumb cake piece, then added white gesso to both the crumb cake piece and soft sky piece, distressing the edges and adding a bit of crimping just to one corner of the soft sky panel.  I accented with some pearl stars from my stash and then adhered to a crumb cake card base.

June Diva Dare - Day 10

Hey everyone! Jen here bringing you day 10 of this month's Diva Dare "Puddles of Color".

This month's dare pays tribute to Diva Jen (Deconstructing Jen) (that's me) who loves to color and Diva Janelle (Rain Puddles Design) who also colors beautifully, often uses paint on her cards and is a wonderful mixed media artist. So what we're daring you to create this month is a card using coloring and/or painting. If you want to kick the dare up a notch, you can add kraft card stock to the mix (Jen's specialty) and/or make a mixed media card (Janelle's specialty). Here is the link to Splitcoast Stamper's "Mix-Ability" Forum for some tutorials and ideas on Mixed Media should you want to try it out. This is not a requirement but a fun "extra" should you wish to add it to your card. Just remember to use at least one Verve product on your creation!

Here's my take on the dare:

For my card I started with what I typically start with - a kraft cardbase and I roughed up the edges a bit with a distress tool. Next I layered up a the background with patterned paper from my scrap pile (I believe it's MME's Nostalgia). I edged the patterned paper with Picket Fence Distress Paint (a la Janelle) but once it dried it was pretty sheer and didn't pick up in the photo, it shows up more in person. Lastly I stitched the edges. For the middle panel I embossed a rectangle of kraft with a quatrefoil embossing folder, distressed it, edged it with Picket Fence Distress Paint, edged with Vintage Photo Distress Ink and stitched the edges. Over this I layered a thin strip of patterned paper, also edged with Vintage Photo and adhered this to the background and wrapped it with twine thread. The sentiment panel is stamped using the frame from On Occasion  the small flower and sentiment from Let It Be and die cut using the Occasion Frame Die. This was adhered with foam tape.

June Diva Dare - Day 9

Here is my take on the dare:

For my card, I began with Jen's classic kraft cardstock as my base and sentiment layers.  I heat embossed the sentiment from Verve's Let it Be set as Jen also does often.  Unfortunately, I can't paint to save my life, so to highlight Janelle's talents, I colored up some of the beautiful flowers from Verve's Let it Be set with Prismacolor pencils.  I also tried to use some artistic DP and a bold color pallet as a nod to Janelle's fabulous mixed media creations.  A little distressing, some new ribbon from Verve's Summer Sailing Ribbon pack, and some pennant banners from Verve's Banner bundle die set were added for some pizazz!   As some added inspiration, I used this week's Viva la Verve sketch (June week 4) designed by Diva Janelle:

Here's what I came up with...



For my card, I combined Jen's love of Kraft and Janelle's use of paint!  I started with some patterned paper from Basic Grey, added some white paint around the edges as well as some stitching.   I combined the large flower image and one of the sentiments from the Let it Be set.  I framed the sentiment using the Classy Label Die.  The ribbon is from the new Summer Sailing Ribbon Collection.  I LOVE that Verve is now carrying ribbon!  :-)

Here is my take on the dare:

In honor of Jen...I added kraft and lots of color (noun), but kept my coloring (verb) to a minimum (she's also a school teacher, so she should appreciate my use of the same word in two different forms :) The flower is from Verve's Surely Goodness set. I heat embossed the design in white embossing powder and colored in the petals with an Aqua painter and dye inks. To add a bit of pizazz, I also dotted the petals with Liquid Pearls dimensional paint. (That's about as far as my 'mixed media' tribute goes {tips hat to Janelle}.) The leaves are stamped from the Dream Big set and punched out with the coordinating Dreamy Leaves die. They got doused with liquid pearls, too! The sentiment is also stamped/heat embossed and that phrase is from Let It Be. The heart border down the right side is from Verve's Scalloped Trim Trio set and I used negatives of the punched out hearts to add to the sentiment. The ribbon is a new collection from Verve, this one is from the Red, White and Beautiful set. Some paper piercing, a button and twine bow and it's all good!

Hi there, friends! Welcome to Day 6 of the June Diva Dare!

Jen's colouring is phenomenal and Janelle's showcases mixed media like no other. So what we're daring you to create this month is a card using colouring and/or painting.  If you want to kick the dare up a notch, you can add kraft card stock to the mix (Jen's specialty) and/or make a mixed media card (Janelle's specialty).  Here is the link to Splitcoast Stamper's "Mix-Ability" Forum for some tutorials and ideas on Mixed Media should you want to try it out.  This is not a requirement but a fun "extra" should you wish to add it to your card. Just remember to use at least one Verve product on your creation! 

For my project, I knew I wanted to create a canvas! This is just a small 5x7 canvas I got at Joann's for 2.99 on sale, score! I painted it black (and have some white stripes on the sides for interest, you'll see that in the next couple pictures) and then just built it up like I would a card.

The sentiment and flowers are all from "Let it Be".

I also used some of the black polka dot ribbon from the Polka Dot Basics ribbon collection. I finished the piece off with some rhinestones, buttons, and twine!

June Diva Dare ~ Day 5

Puddles of Colour, June Diva Dare

Today's card is for a retiring teacher at our school.  My school's P.A.C. (Parent Advisory Council) approached me last week to make 2 commissioned cards for retiring staff members.  I knew that the Teachers Count set would be perfect for our Grade 7 teacher, finishing a career full of dedication, enthusiasm, caring and love.   Answering this month's Diva Dare was a thrill!  Jen's use of kraft with colour is always yummy!  So that's where I started with the base of my card along with some My Mind's Eye Kraft Funday paper.  Then I chose some alphabet paper with gorgeous colours.  THEN it was play time channelling Janelle with making the little faux chalkboard using The Occasion Frame die and coordinating frame image from On Occasion.  I embossed the frame and sentiment with white embossing powder, then smudged some white craft ink over everything to give it a chalky look.  Then I took a white pencil crayon and added some light colouring details.  I tucked 2 golden delicious apples under the frame using the Apples Die set, tied some lovely Signature Collection seam binding ribbon with a scrap of pink ribbon around the card and let all those twine and thread ends run wild! LOL  Now it's YOUR turn...

June Diva Dare - Day 4

Puddles of Colour, June Diva Dare

Hey there summer crafters! It's Janelle here for Day 4 of our Diva Dare challenge this month. Puddles of Colour is our theme and it's about using wonderful color from two Diva styles! 

This month's dare pays tribute to Diva Jen (Deconstructing Jen) who is an amazing colourist and me, Diva Janelle (Rain Puddles Design) who is hopefully known to have a Copic in one hand and paintbrush in the other.

So what we're daring you to create this month is a card using colouring and/or painting.  If you want to kick the dare up a notch, you can add kraft card stock to the mix (Jen's specialty) and/or make a mixed media card (Janelle's specialty).  Here is the link to Splitcoast Stamper's "Mix-Ability" Forum for some tutorials and ideas on Mixed Media should you want to try it out.  This is not a requirement but a fun "extra" should you wish to add it to your card. Just remember to use at least one Verve product on your creation!   

Here's my take on this month's dare. I created background paper with acrylic paint, bubble wrap, paper doily and punchinello for stencils and Verve's On Occasion and Take Note stamp sets. (You can sponge acrylic paint on your stamp, stamp it quickly and brush them off without harming the stamp. I use water and an old toothbrush to clean them.) Next I used a credit card to smear white gesso paint on an old text book page before stamping the flowers from On Occasion. Those flowers were colored with vibrant water soluble oil pastels and fussy cut out to put on the stamped frame from the same set. I stamped the sentiment from the Let It Be set onto the frame and used the coordinating Occasion Frame Die to cut it out.

I added two hand cut banners from black cardstock to go along with the week three Viva La Verve sketch. The ribbon is a great match to the acrylic paint I used and is from the Summer Sailing Ribbon Collection. All of this is happily put onto a kraft cardstock base. There's a subtle shading with graphite pencils, any pencil will do really, and then a black pen to create a border. That's it!

Here's a quick little plug if you are thinking about having a go with mixed media.  Any project that uses more than two mediums is considered mixed media! Easy! If you take a look at the Mix-Ability Challenges Shopping List thread you'll find that you already have most of them in your crafty stash.

Here is my take on the dare.

I used the Teachers Count set along with the coordinating Apples Die Set.   I started with Jen's Specialty, Kraft cardstock, and stamped the apples using acrylic paint daubers in Red Pepper and Lettuce.  The sentiment was stamped in white onto black cardstock and embossed.  I used some corrugated cardboard to die cut the apples using the Apples Die Set and also the scallop heart border using the Scalloped Trim Trio.  

I used the the Red Pepper and Lettuce paint daubers to color the corrugated apples and used Snow Cap to color the scalloped border.  I added a little tab to the right side of the sentiment using the NEW Red, White and Beautiful Ribbon Collection.  I added some Snow Cap acrylic paint to the edges of the Kraft cardstock as well as to the edges of the black cardstock of the base of the card.  Now it's YOUR turn!!

So what we're daring you to create this month is a card using colouring and/or painting.  If you want to kick the dare up a notch, you can add kraft card stock to the mix (Jen's specialty) and/or make a mixed media card (Janelle's specialty).  Here is the link to Splitcoast Stamper's "Mix-Ability" Forum for some tutorials and ideas on Mixed Media should you want to try it out.  This is not a requirement but a fun "extra" should you wish to add it to your card. Just remember to use at least one Verve product on your creation! 

I have dabbled a tiny bit with mixed media so I answered the dare using mixed media using bolder colors. I have used Tim Holtz distressed paints for the background piece of paper, the color is pickled raspberry, luv that name...lol.  I added a little spun sugar on top to tone it down just a bit, still leaving it with a very rich color. I really like gesso, even though I only know how to use it one way. I made my own stencil by punching out circles from a solid piece of mask. I then rubbed the gesso over the holes, layering it on sorta thick...I luv this look! I  stamped the sentiment using the Verve set Let It Be and the flower was stamped cut out and sponged; it is from the set On Occasion. I completed my card by adding the Verve ribbon from the Black Beauty Collection, and a few gems. The sketch is one of Jen's from Deconstructed Sketch. I hope you are inspired and I cannot wait to see how you answer the Puddles of Color dare!
